Kindle Fic!

Did y’all know you can format fanfic to be read on the Kindle? If you did, don’t tell me since I already feel like I’m out of the loop. I didn’t even want one of the things, because I didn’t know that I’d ever use it that much.

Anyway, rakshi came up with the idea of having a comm devoted to fanfic for the Kindle. Much in the way that the idea of podfic has taken off, she hopes to do the same kind of archive with Kindle-ized fic. Link to the comm:kindle_fanfic

Right now, the comm mostly has fic from LOTR and LOTRIPS authors, but we would like the comm to reflect ALL fandoms. So this is a request for the phenomenal authors on my f-list: if you would like to have your fic Kindle-zed and archived on the comm, please let me know. NO ONE will have fic archived without their express permission. All headers, authors notes, etc that are included with the fic will be included in the Kindle file, although images are not recommended as they take up a lot of space. All authors will have their own area of the ‘library’. Even though Kindle is an Amazon product, Amazon DOES NOT know what is on your Kindle—they only have info about ebooks you’ve purchased from them. So there are no worries about Amazon knowing what’s been converted.

SGA:Atlantis! Top Gear! Supernatural! J2! Harry Potter! Bandom! Anything I might have forgotten! If you’re on my f-list, it kinda goes without saying you’re an excellent writer. We’d love to have your stuff for the Kindle!

Oh, and if you don’t have a Kindle? Since the Kindle 2 came out, Kindle 1 is selling for a very decent price on Ebay. Just sayin’.

They're cheaper than that now. But yeah, still kinda pricy.

A lot of people seem to have them, though. And the appeal of being able to carry fic and around, as opposed to needing a computer to read it (like on trips and stuff) is a big draw. Speaking from the POV of someone who has lugged 3 or 4 novels on plane trips (I read really, really fast) having only one thing to carry, that has books and newspapers and my favorite fics on it makes for much less luggage.

Or, I dunno, maybe not. YMMV

That said, I think that offering fic formatted for the Kindle is a pretty cool idea, right up there with podfic.

Yeah, I suppose if I travelled a lot, especially for work where I was going by myself, I could see it being worth it. I just don't see the expense being worth it otherwise, though. That's what books and computers are for. :)

We're talking about fanfiction.. not books. And the Kindle 1 sells fairly inexpensively on ebay. You don't need the latest version.

Kindle also lets you bring in hundreds of blogs and feeds from newspapers and magazines. So.. it's not 300 bucks to read a book. Honest. It's a lot less.. to read THOUSANDS of books and all the fanfiction you'd ever want. To me.. that's cheap at twice the price.

I guess it depends on what you consider inexpensive. :D The Kindle 1 is still upwards of $200 here in Canada, which to me is a lot for something that's pure luxury.

Now, as celtprincess13 pointed out, if I travelled a lot, I can totally see it being worth it, to avoid having to pack books, and take fanfic to read on a long flight. Then, it would be awesome for sure.

But since that's not the case? I have a library that can get me thousands of books for free, and I have a computer where I can read the fanfic immediately, without having to convert and dl. I think I'll stay low-tech. :)

I get what you're saying, totally. It IS definitely a 'toy' not a necessity. And as I said, I wasn't so sure about even wanting one until I knew about the fanfic part.

And I can see, too, the difference it makes that you're in Canada as opposed to the US because I'm sure they're a lot lot less available to purchase second-hand.

But that's cool--low tech is OK too. But if there's anyone who writes Top Gear that you think would want to have their fic Kindle-ized, point them our direction, yeah?

Which part are you investigating, the fact that you can put fic on there or that fact that the Kindle 1's have gone down in price?

Well, as it happens I haven't been doing a lot of electronic reading lately, but I have still been thinking about the kindle. :D

Just the other day I was looking at some stuff and thinking of selling it on ebay. Maybe I could turn it into a kindle!
