In a slightly strange place atm - mostly because I found two jobs to apply for, both with differing pros and cons, and both amazing opportunites.

I've finished the application for one - which is potentially long term, in a beautiful part of the country and an amazing opportunity - it's all submitted and closing date passed, so it's wait and see. I was interested, but doing the application and still dwelling on it now, has thrown me off *heh*

The other I have a week and a bit to go - not started yet, needing a rest after the last one! - it's a maternity cover, so would only be a short term, I don't have to move, but it'd give my CV a huge boast.

So yeah - tis weird. We will finally be getting a new boss at work (but all the lead in has made for an interesting atmosphere - they clearly wanted an external person, leaving all us internals all too aware that we have absolutely no progression opportunities, and as the single, childless work person, this queued me poking much more actively for new jobs. Which of course, me being single, need to be on the higher side paywise or I just can't afford to live (unless local, which leaves me with the same stuck in parents house situation :/)

The weather has been rather varied (with flash floods - I just made it home, but had to drive through white out torrential rain, work mate poked me to make sure I'd made it home and everything!)

Good morning everyone, and welcome to Radio Free Monday!

Ways To Give:

Anon reminds us that the 2017-18 school year is coming, and [tumblr.com profile] positivelypt has a post up with links to wishlists for underserved classrooms. You can check out the list, give, and reblog here.

[tumblr.com profile] rilee16 is struggling to cover medical expenses after two head injuries last year, and has a fundraiser running to cover living expenses, previous medical bills, and a recent rent increase. You can read more and help out here.

Help For Free:

Anon linked to [tumblr.com profile] globalsextrendsproject, who are working on an independent research projected aimed at establishing whether there are global trends in stimuli for sexual arousal and the content of sexual fantasies. You can read more and reblog here or fill out the form here. I took a quick breeze through the form and it's primarily short-answer rather than multiple choice, once you get past the demographic stuff.

Activism:

[tumblr.com profile] stabulous has a post up about Welcome Blanket, a project initiated by the Smart Museum of Art in Chicago and anti-Trump craftivists. They are asking people to send handmade blankets to be exhibited at the Smart and afterwards distributed to refugees and immigrants arriving in the US. The hope is to create 3200 blankets to equal the length of the wall Trump wants to build across the US-Mexico border. You can read more at the link above, and find out how to participate at the official site, which includes activism resources whether you want to actually send in a blanket or not.

News To Know:

[personal profile] brainwane linked to Creative Commons, which is offering grants of up to USD$1000 for small projects ("Salons, campaigns, translations, e-books, printing, collaborations, and more") which grow the global commons. They want help increasing discovery, collaboration, and advocacy towards their mission. You can read more and apply for a grant here.

Anon linked to [tumblr.com profile] dr-kara's new comic available on ComixOlogy, [Super]Natural Attraction! Kara is well-known to me as a groovy artist who does cool stuff so while I haven't read this yet I wholeheartedly recommend her work. She has a rebloggable post about it here and you can buy and read it here.

And this has been Radio Free Monday! Thank you for your time. You can post items for my attention at the Radio Free Monday submissions form. If you're not sure how to proceed, here is a little more about what I do and how you can help (or ask for help!). If you're new to fundraising, you may want to check out my guide to fundraising here.

I still have to review Extra Virginity as well, but I actually liked that one, so it will take longer to compose….

One of the things I did get done yesterday between work, the ball game, and the Epic Sunburn, was finish a slim book of short stories called A City Equal to My Desire by James Sallis. This wasn’t a book that was recommended to me, which means I don’t have to feel bad about truly disliking it. I found it in a keyword search on the library website for books about ukuleles, and it has a short story called Ukulele And The World’s Pain, which admittedly was one of the better stories in the book despite still not being very good.

From what I can tell, he did pick the best story out of the book to develop into a novel, “Drive”, but it is very obviously unfinished in short-story form. Sallis has a couple of ongoing problems in the short story collection, one of which is that he tends to skip the vital information you need in order to know what the fuck is going on. And not in a “the blanks slowly get filled in” way, or in a “your imagination is more terrible” way (though there is a little of that) but just in a way where like…he says something that you understand to be vital to the story but which is missing context, then spends like a page describing the fucking diner someone’s sitting in, and by then any context forthcoming doesn’t get linked back. It’s like being in the middle of a paragraph when you hit the photo plates in an older book – yes the photos are very interesting thank you but I need to finish the thought you were sharing with me before I go back and look at them. I think maybe he thinks this is challenging the reader but it’s not, it’s just annoying and makes what are otherwise interesting premises totally opaque. I shouldn’t need to work this hard for a story about a hit man who decides not to kill a politician.

If the book had a more cohesive theme in terms of the stories, it might be more readable – he clearly enjoys building worlds and then doesn’t quite know what to do with them once he’s built them, so if this was an entire book of “weird and different worlds” ala Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, I would buy in more fully and I think he would have put a little more elbow in. But it’s not. It’s mostly “here’s a really interesting world and a person living in squalor in it does something while being in it”. Also he appears to be fascinated by describing things that are shaped like pi. And a lot of times it feels like he read a wikipedia article on something and wanted to share some knowledge, so he just kind of built a half-assed story around his wikiwander.

And all of this I would probably let go if say, it was something I was noticing in a fanfic writer, or someone who was just starting out, or someone I felt was genuinely trying to get a point across. But there’s this inexplicable sense of arrogance to the collection, a sort of smugness to it that in professional writers drives me up the goddamn wall. Stephen King sometimes falls into the same trap, where it feels like the author believes they don’t have to respect their readers because they are The Writer.

The thing about volumes of short stories is that you keep reading it because sometimes there is a real gem. And there are one or two good stories in the volume, but I don’t know if they’re worth the rest of it.

So my review I guess is mostly me being annoyed, but it boils down to “If you like short stories in the SFF Noir genre, give it a whirl, but if you’re bored with a story none of them get better, so feel free to skip to the next one.”

It's been a while since I've posted. LJ (& DW) don't have the same vibrancy as they used to for me - which isn't helped by me not posting either, I know. I can hardly complain about my sense of loss of community when I'm not posting much myself!
Anyhoo - a little update on things at Chez Buddy.

Bud's doing really well. He's living with severe IBD, but his latest meds seem to have really helped & he's gained back all of the weight that he lost. He's so well that some of his other meds have been reduced or removed completely. This time last year, he was such a poorly boy & we didn't think that he'd make it, but he's such a fighter. He's on a prescription diet, but his appetite has come back & he's really enjoying life. Although he is a bit of an old man now - he's 11 & 1/2 - & so he does snooze quite a bit! ♥

Here he is on one of our favourite walks. It's a National Trust hill range & woodland that's 5 minutes walk from our door.

I'm doing really well, too. I saw my oncologist a few weeks ago & he's very happy with my scans & blood tests. I have to go back in the autumn for some more extensive scans, but so far things are looking very good. *fc*

Mr B, Bud & myself are off on our holibobs in a week or so. We've hired a cottage in Northumberland that overlooks the sea & you can see Dunstanburgh Castle (a gorgeous ruin) along the coast. So, it's going to be lovely morning walks on the beach & lots of other exploring - Hadrian's Wall & castles galore! Yay!

I hope that everyone is doing well. I do try & keep an eye on my flist & reading circle, even if I don't always comment.
*hugs*

I am like….90% sure I’m going camping this Friday.

It depends a bit on the weather, but I’m mostly packed, I’ve cooked food that’s currently waiting in the freezer, and I have acquired the third Diane Mott Davidson book to read.

The plan is to leave work early, catch the train to the campground, camp overnight, and in the morning hike out to a different train station further down the line, about a seven-mile trek, to do a longer endurance test than last weekend’s. Then I’ll catch the train home around noon on Saturday.

If something goes wrong, I can catch an evening train home on Friday until eight o’clock, or starting in the morning at 5:30, with little to no exertion. It’s pretty low-risk and I’m well stocked. I don’t have a sleeping pad, but my backpack has a partial one built-in, and I have one arriving tomorrow (though it might be too bulky, we’ll see). And honestly in this heat, I might just sleep on top of my sleeping bag in any case.

Worst case scenario, the campground has heated, lockable shower cubicles with nice big floors. I’ve slept on worse.

Caaaaaaamping! *jazz hands*

So I did a funny little tour of some of the southern Scottish islands and shambled around Oban area for a while. My pictures are aminly from either my phone or digital polaroid, because Athena pulled me down a slope and my 'better' camera got clayed.....

We visited, looked at, a total of 15 castles apparently. More than I thought! Only pictures of 10 though. Well that I can find easily!

All Castle photos behind here )

The State of Spooky

Hi all! Yes, I’m still alive. :-)

Many thanks to those several of you who have dropped me notes over the past couple of months to check up on me. I greatly appreciate you thinking about me and your concern. You’ve given me the nudge to get on here and post an update.

Things at the end of May weren’t too bad. I was quite busy, actually. I worked several police volunteer events, which I always love doing. Then I had five days off for the Memorial Day holiday, and I was on the go with John, running around and having fun. I was also deep in the midst of my new ebook releasing, which occupied all of my spare time with marketing and promotion. Oh, and I also started up yoga classes again.

Things started to fall apart in June, in regards to work. I was completely and utterly betrayed by my two oldest friends of 15 years. They lied to me, stabbed me in the back and when I confronted them about their lies they turned it all around on me. We haven’t spoken since. I was utterly devastated. Then another blow came at work as well, right on top of this and and slipped into a long state of depression.

I tried to rally around mid-month, for my 23rd wedding anniversary with John. Only to find out our favorite French restaurant where we were having dinner, was closing the next week. So that didn’t help my mindset!

Things perked up a bit at the end of June. At work, I’ve reconnected with a gal who I’ve known for ten years and we’ve become quite close. It’s been nice to have a good friend again. I had friends from Fort Wayne in visiting for three days, who I hadn’t seen in many years, so it was a great reunion. I also worked another high-profile police volunteer event (a DUI roadblock) and it was a fascinating, amazing experience.

I took several days off around the 4th of July and went out and did several activities with John, which was really nice. I also went to the Styx / REO Speedwagon concert with my best friend Chris. What a fabulous night! And then just last week I saw the Queen concert with Adam Lambert, which was also fantastic. Had last Friday off of work and John and I spent the day together, then Chris came over on Sunday so that we could do our on-line check-in for our cruise to Alaska next month.

I should have known that things were going too well for me and looking up for a change and I received three bad blows in the last few days (two work related, one writing related) that have knocked me on my ass. So after this update I might be disappearing for awhile again. But I wanted to at least jump on and let you guys know what’s been going on with me lately.

Thank you all again for your concern. That really touches me. I’ve got a lot of great friends here. :-)

I hope all of you have been doing well these past couple of months. Let me know what you’ve been up to! I’ve missed chatting with all of you!

So - I let my paid LJ lapse so am back to having ads all the time on there - but I wasn't really willing to pay for LJ with how it goes now - I did import all my LJ before hand though, to make sure I didn't lose anything.

I also had a moment where I thought I still had loads of links to my ancient photobucket account, but it turns out I stopped using them years ago, like almost a decade o.O - so my graphics links are actually pretty much all still live so yay.

We didn't have a great wimbledon - but we did get some champions so not terrible (mixed doubles and wheelchair ladies and gents doubles! aka we're good at doublea apparently ;) )

13th Doctor got announced - and yay girl!doctor is canon (though *coughs* we did have a girl!doctor in the comic relief skit ;) ) though not sure about the actress (and it feels more and more like the joss whedon old boys club thing - with her having worked so much with the new boss :/) but we'll have to see!
(I am actually going to watch it again, just to see what new showrunner does, as his run of Torchwood was the best, though his other work is a bit mixed....)

I dropped out of het big bang (because I couldn't see me getting done in time so :/) - but Genex and most likely crossovering (though a little foiled, as someone listed one of my fandoms saying they'd nom'd it, turns out they hadn't? But still plenty of options, it's just deciding....)

Will be posting some scottish castle photos tomorrow (from my May tour of the isles ;) - I saw lots of pretty castles, though sadly you can't go into many of them cos ruins and having the hound).
